The History of the Valknut

Always on a Learning Journey...

In a remote southwestern Colorado town, I met a gentleman who recognized the Valknut and Óðinn ravens on my car's doors, engaged us in conversation. It was a pleasant conversation, sharing our common religious backgrounds. He commented that the Valknut wasn't created until the 1600's. Wait, wut?!?! I've seen pictures from the Seventh Century CE with the Valknut. How can this be?

After getting back home, I decided it was time to resolve this mental conflict. To that end, yes, he was right ... and I was right. The name first appeared in 1670, and the graphic appeared in the seventh century.
