What genre is the Helsgaard series?

The Helsgaard series should be read in the following order:

Grimdark? Gimme the Deets!

This series contains many grimdark elements, including racial prejudice among Humans, Dragons, Dwarfs, and Aelfs; personal violence; blood and gore; and decapitation.

Readers can also expect dark military humor, profanity in Norse and Germanic-inspired languages, and a morally gray wartime setting in which survival and duty often outweigh clear notions of right and wrong.

It may also include the in-progress death of a major character described in detail; scenes involving Post-Traumatic Stress; and the depiction of evolving mental illness in someone under the age of 18.

The series includes a small amount of romance and historically- and culturally-accurate nudity and cohabitation, but no on-page sex.

What is the premise behind the Helsgaard series?

The premise behind the Helsgaard series is the stories in the Sagas and Eddas were based in fact. Dwarfs, Aelfs, and Dragons existed. The gods existed. These stories don't just recite the gods' names, they weave the gods' perceived motives into the characters actions and reactions.

Granted, there is some artistic license taken. Griffins didn't exist in the Nordic world, but they are a very convenient transportation system. Likewise, the Orcs in this story are borrowed from modern fantasy because the author likes mohawks, green skin and tusks.
